Abstract

Now-a-days, the incorporation of shear walls has become inevitable in multi-storey buildings for resisting the lateral forces occurring due to wind or seismic loads. Hence it is essential to determine effective, efficient and ideal location of shear walls because if not, it may cause negative effects on the the performance of the structure instead. It is well accepted that a building with core type shear wall has better chance of resisting the lateral forces.  In this project, a study will be carried out to determine the effect of curtailment of shear walls on the performance of buildings with core type shear walls. Four different cases of shear wall curtailment for G+9 storey building with keeping zero eccentricity between mass center and hardness center will be analyzed and designed as a frame system by computer application software ETABS. The four cases considered will be such that shear walls will run up to the G+8, G+7, G+6 and G+5 storey levels. The structural stability of these models with curtailed shear walls will be compared to the first model in which shear walls runs for the entire height of the building. A comparative analysis will shed light on the effect of curtailment of shear walls on the structural performance.
