Abstract

Sedimentation in a reservoir is a natural phenomenon and its effect is to reduce the storage capacity of reservoirs. The loss in storage capacity affects the usefulness of the water resource project in many ways, for example, lesser storage is available for power generation, and flood moderation. During construction of water resource project, an estimation of sedimentation is done and accordingly, its provision is included. But, the rate of sedimentation exceeds and it is obvious due to increased development activities in the catchment of the reservoir and may be due to some others reasons also. Thus in order to determine the useful life of the reservoir, it is essential to periodically assess the sedimentation rate in a reservoir.

Recently the remote sensing techniques have emerged as an effective, convenient and very cheap mechanism to quantify sedimentation in a reservoir and to assess its distribution and deposition patterns.

This article deals with some reservoir sedimentation studies done by various researchers all over the world.
