Abstract

A German engineer, Dr Rudolf Diesel designed an engine in 1892 which work on a much higher compression ratio than the petrol engine working on Otto cycle. This engine gave a higher thermal efficiency and better fuel consumption.
Air was inducted into the cylinder and compressed to a high pressure, the fuel being sprayed through an injector under high pressure, is called Diesel engine. The most common type of alternative diesel engine which instead of igniting the compressed air fuel mixture with a spark uses compression alone, heating the mixture to the point where it explode.
